Q. Please give some information about the Melungeons --- D. C.

A. There is little authentic knowledge of the Melungeons, a people found in certain parts of Tennessee and Virginia. They are about the same color as mulattoes with no other discernible Negro traits. According to their own tradition they are of Moorish descent, probably descendants of the ancient Phoenicians. They settled in Portugal and later crossed the Atlantic before the Revolutionary war, settling in South Carolina, due to discriminatory taxes and ostracism they emigrated in a body and settled in Hancock County, Tennessee
